Chiefly papers of Joseph Catesby Thom (1809-1881) of "Berry Hill," Culpeper County, Va., including correspondence, account books, loose accounts, and estate papers. Some materials concern the emancipation of the slaves of John Triplett Thom (1770-1855) after his death. Also included are genealogical notes and correspondence of William Taylor Thom (1849-1930) concerning the Ball, Downman, Lewis, Mertins, Thom and Waring families. Early papers are miscellaneous estate and legal papers of the Ball family of Lancaster and Old Rappahannock counties, including deeds of gift for slaves.
